Five on Friday: The Summer I Read
Five titles I loved reading this summer
Ah, summer. I love the season. And I think, in my book loving, cozy heart, I should love fall. But I’m always so sad to see the warm weather go. And the thought of the impending Canadian winter? Blergh. SO. I thought I’d give a round up of five of the books I read this summer that I adored. I chose books I haven’t reviewed so, if you’re just a reader of the blog, you may not have seen me talking about these titles over on Instagram.
Drop your favourite summer reads in the comments. There’s still a couple weeks left of the summer, after all!
My Oxford Year
I reread Julia Whelan’s debut novel for a book club I ran at the library I work at. I didn’t know who Julia Whelan was when I first read My Oxford Year so for the reread I made sure to listen to the audiobook this time around. It gave me all the feels, just as it did back in 2018 when it was published. Most of the club members enjoyed it, even if they weren’t expecting the ending. Some wanted it to be happier, others thought it should have been even more devastating. And, no, I haven’t watched the movie yet!
A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping
I loved loved loved Sangu Mandanna’s 2022 novel The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches so A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping was high on my To Be Read list and, thankfully, it delivered. I listened to it and it was like being wrapped in a cozy blanket with a cup of magical tea. If you love a good witchy book, you need to add this one to your list.
Love in the Neighborhood
I beta read Marie Landry’s upcoming novel and, no surprise, it was amazing. Love in the Neighborhood was a stunning romance that you’re going to want to read this holiday season. The characters were ones you can’t help but root for and want to befriend. Read it, love it, tell a friend.
Atmosphere
I, and seemingly every other reader, devoured Atmosphere this spring and summer. Taylor Jenkins Reid has been a bit of a miss for me lately but I thought I’d give her latest a try - and made sure to do it on audiobook. Julia Whelan and Kristen DiMercurio narrate it and they’re both award-winning narrators. So if you haven’t read this one and have been intrigued, make sure you listen to it. And keep a box of tissues nearby!
The Wedding People
I’d heard good things about The Wedding People but wasn’t really sure what it was about. A skip the line audiobook copy came available at just the right time. It was an emotional, funny, and engaging story that kept my interest from start to finish. Definitely worth a read!
